Every year, beaches in Odisha become nesting places for thousands of tortoises that come flapping to the sandy shore, dig and lay eggs, and, return to the sea. After a few days, a brilliant spectacle unfolds as hundreds of these hatchlings come out of the sandy nests, and by instinct, head to the beach to start a new life! Isn't this spectacular?! These beaches stretches are protected by environmentalists as tortoise and turtles play quite an imperative role in our ecosystem!
The 23rd of May is dedicated to all these amphibians who play the role of keeping our oceans and the sea clean. Turtles are smaller than the tortoises. Both live long. Turtles can be seen in ponds, lakes and rivers.
Wildlife trafficking has spread its nest to these gentle creatures as they are sold in black market as pets. Some people believe that keeping these as pets will bring them good luck. None of these are substantiated and they are just hearsays.
Let us be more aware about these gentle amphibians of our water bodies. Let's also bring awareness to our children to eradicate trafficking of these denizens of the water bodies. For our Earth belongs to every one of us as we have the right to live.
