The birth anniversary of Gauthama Buddha is celebrated as Buddha Purnima on the 12th of May. The celebrations mainly reflect Buddha's teachings on non-violence; which is Ahimsa and Nirvana.

The Buddha was born in Lumbini, Nepal and attained enlightenment under the Bodh Gaya Tree.

Buddha Purnima is celebrated in India and many south east Asian countries. People who follow Buddhism visit the monasteries, recite hymns, give alms, light candles and inscence sticks and pray in peace. Some even release caged birds and animals as a symbol of compassion and freedom.

The Buddha's teachings are relevant even to this day as being kind, humane and compassionate can take us to a higher evel of peace within ourselves. Let's follow these simple principles and better our societies as the best individuals.

HAPPY BUDDHA PURNIMA.
