Earth gives life to uncountable beings that thrive in different demographic zones. The 10th of May is dedicated to all the migratory birds that fly around the globe in search of food and to raise their chicks.
There are countless wetlands in our country and Lake Chilika in Odisha is famous to house thousands of these birds, big and small that flock to breed and feed during specific months of the year.
Closer home, our very own Ranganathittu welcomes hundreds of birds, some as far as Siberia. These migratory birds flock to breed, raise their fledglings and fly away to their respective homes with them. Amazing, aren't they?
These birds have special navigational systems in their brains, passed on from their predecessors! And, do you know they can fly long distances and sleep with one eye closed and the other eye open?
Lastly, let us show our appreciation to a tiny bird, the Artic Tern that flies from the Artic to the Antartica, a whopping 25,000 miles every year. Amazing, isn't it?
These birds map the land marks that they come across. This is the main reason that we mustn't bulldoze wetlands and make them into concrete jungles.
